Compound Die Stamping – How The Process Works

Compound die stamping is a metal stamping process that allows for the simultaneous cutting, bending, and forming of metal sheets in a single operation. This process is particularly useful for high-volume production of complex parts with tight tolerances, such as brackets, clips, and electrical contacts.

The compound die stamping process involves the use of a die that consists of multiple stations, each with a unique cutting, forming, or bending operation. The die is mounted on a press that applies force to the metal sheet, which is positioned between the die and a blank holder. The blank holder holds the metal sheet in place and prevents it from wrinkling or buckling during the stamping process.

As the press applies force, the metal sheet is first cut by the cutting station in the die. Then, the metal sheet moves to the next station where it is bent or formed according to the desired shape. This process continues as the metal sheet moves through each station in the die until the final shape is achieved.

One advantage of the compound die stamping process is its efficiency, as it eliminates the need for multiple operations and setups to achieve the desired part shape. This reduces production time and cost, as well as the potential for errors in part dimensions and tolerances. However, this process is most effective for producing parts with simple geometries and relatively low levels of complexity. For more complex shapes and geometries, a progressive die stamping process may be more appropriate.
