Deburring is a finishing process that involves the removal of burrs, or rough-edged material. Burrs are left behind from the grinding, milling, engraving and drilling processes of the material that is being manufactured. The different types of rough-edged materials within the deburring process include poisson, rollover and breakout burrs. In addition, there are a wide range of deburring techniques, some of which include: manual deburring, thermal deburring, mechanical deburring and electrochemical deburring.
The process of cutting threads on the inside surface of a drilled hole is known as tapping. A specialized tool called a tap is used to complete this process. Taps are necessary when connecting a screw or bolt to the tapping hole. The tapping process can also be used to cut threads into a nut’s inner surface. Other ways to create taps include the utilization of a milling machine, tapping machine, hand tap tool or lathe machine.
The machining process involves removing excess material from a workpiece. This can be accomplished through the turning, milling and drilling of the metal that is being fabricated. These processes can turn an ordinary piece of metal into a complex part or a decorative piece of artwork.
Grinding is an abrasive machining process that utilizes a high powered wheel as the finishing tool. Grinding can produce extremely fine finishes and outstandingly accurate dimensions. The grinding process works by making microscopic grinding cuts to the surface of the material, which if done long enough can create a part that is machined to your exact specifications.
The countersinking process involves the conical cutting of a hole into a metal object. This is done to remove drilling and tapping burrs, or to create a tight seal when screwing in compatible fittings, which ultimately prevents corrosion. This process can also be used to create space for the head of a screw or bolt, so it can be flush with the surface of the material.
The process of covering a material with a thin layer of metal is known as plating. This process is utilized to add the beneficial qualities of the plating material to the material that is being plated. Plating is often utilized for the following reasons: inhibit corrosion, reduce friction, hardening, decorative factors, improve weatherability, alter conductivity and more. Many tools and household products are plated to enhance their durability.
The anodizing process works by increasing the corrosion resistance of metal by forming a sacrificial oxide layer on the surface of the material. This provides improved corrosion resistance and increased paint primer and glue adhesion, while improving the overall cosmetic effects of the material. Due to these benefits, anodized materials typically have a much longer lifespan than non-anodized.

Material passivation is a process that reduces the surface chemical reactivity of a metal. Passivation removes the unwanted metal qualities of a material, leaving only the desired surface layer materials. Once exposed to air the new outside layer elements of the material react to the oxygen and forms a protective layer that protects the stainless steel from corrosion.
Powder coating is a finishing product that is designed to protect machinery and machined parts from the industrial rigors of which they are exposed. Powder coating provides increased durability over painting, while showcasing favorable scratch, fade, chip, corrosion and abrasion resistance. Powder coatings offer an environmentally-friendly, easy-to-use option for providing part protection.
